    Becoming a Teacher: A Forum for Career Changers

    Are you considering transitioning into a career in education?  Bank Street has worked with many professional who are considering making a career switch like this, and helped them transition into the world of education. Join us for Becoming a Teacher: A Forum for Career Changers and explore the realities of making this change for yourself. 

    The event will take place at Bank Street College Graduate School of Education and will start with sign-in and refreshments at 5:15 p.m. The evening continues with important information on what to expect as you consider starting this new journey.

    The event is meant to be informative and engaging so that you may gather needed information and ask any questions about the profession. We look forward to meeting you!  

    ABOUT OUR PANELISTS

    Cat Buckley
    Cat Buckley is a graduate of the College of Charleston where she majored in English. After a spell in Tanzania volunteer teaching, Cat attended the Columbia Publishing Course, and from there got her first job as a staff writer at a startup website. After almost five years on the editorial side of Vanity Fair magazine, Cat went full steam ahead on a career change and began the Early Childhood program at Bank Street. She is currently in her second year at the college and is in the midst of student teaching placements. A Washington, D.C. native she now lives on the Upper West Side with her husband and cat.

    Roland Garrison
    Mr. Garrison received his MS Ed in Childhood General/Special Education from Bank Street College of Education and his BA from The College of New Rochelle. He has taught Lower School at The Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights, and presently teaches at Harlem Link, in Harlem. Mr. Garrison has a diverse and unique background. He served as a Staff Sergeant and a combat medic/orthopedic technician in the United States Army. He studied dance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, and he taught dance performance in Guadeloupe, French West Indies. Mr. Garrison also worked in luxury retail management Mr. Garrison loves teaching more than any other career he has had. He especially loves teaching creative writing. He believes “Either write something worth reading, or do something worth writing” (Benjamin Franklin).

    Jamie Hooper
    Jamie, who is enjoying his 10th school year as a classroom teacher, is currently a Middle School math teacher, math coach, and advisory leader at the Shefa School in Manhattan. Shefa is a 1st-8th grade Jewish day school serving students with language-based learning disabilities. He was also a founding teacher of the JCC's Gift of Math program, an early-intervention after-school tutoring program in NYC public schools. Jamie earned his M.S. Ed. (Dual certification in Special and General Childhood Education) and Ed. M. (Leadership for Educational Change) at Bank Street. Prior to his career change, Jamie spent 18 years in the media business as a magazine publisher and editor. Jamie received his undergraduate degree in religion from Dartmouth College. He lives with his wife and three children on the Upper West Side.
